Hantavirus in Sweden

Overview

Sweden is in the Europe hantavirus context. The country has documented circulation of PUUV (Puumala virus).

Nephropathia epidemica caused by Puumala virus is endemic to Sweden, with roughly 90% of cases concentrated in the four northernmost counties (Norrland). The country experienced a major outbreak in winter 2006/2007, with notification rates reaching 313 per 100 000 in Västerbotten County during 2007.
