Nephropathia epidemica caused by Puumala virus is endemic to Sweden, with roughly 90% of cases concentrated in the four northernmost counties (Norrland). The country experienced a major outbreak in winter 2006/2007, with notification rates reaching 313 per 100 000 in Västerbotten County during 2007.
