Overview
Poland is in the Europe hantavirus context. The country has documented circulation of PUUV, DOBV (Puumala virus, Dobrava-Belgrade virus).
The first cluster of HFRS in Poland was identified in 2007 in the south-eastern Subcarpathian (Podkarpackie) region, which is the recognised endemic area. Three orthohantaviruses co-circulate: Puumala virus (in Myodes glareolus), Dobrava-Belgrade (in Apodemus flavicollis) and Tula virus (in Microtus arvalis). HFRS incidence correlates with mast years, rodent abundance and forest cover.
