Overview
India is in the Asia hantavirus context. The country has documented circulation of SEOV (Seoul virus).
Thottapalayam virus, the prototype shrew-borne hantavirus, was isolated in 1964 from an Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus) in Tamil Nadu and first characterised by Carey et al. in 1971. Subsequent serological work in Tamil Nadu has reported evidence of Seoul-, Thailand- and Hantaan-related infections in select human cohorts. ICMR-NIV is the national diagnostic body.
